Road Racing is a type of automobile racing that was originally conducted on existing roads. As road racing grew in popularity and safety became more of a concern, "natural terrain" road courses were built which followed the ground they were built upon, turning left or right, going up and down hills, etc. The majority of road racing events are held on these dedicated closed courses such as Mid-Ohio, Road America (in Wisconsin), Watkins Glen (in New York), and Laguna Seca (in California). Others are held on road course layouts set in the infield areas of large oval tracks such as those at Daytona or Phoenix. A few events are held each year on temporary circuits on city streets, public parks and airports.

Road Racing News
The Formula V venue celebrated the 50th year of V racing at Roebling Road on April 6th.
Almost 200 FV's showed up for 3 days of practice, qualifying and racing. The new Formula First Class was also invited. Since it was not a points race for the Formuila First Drivers Association only 4 cars entered.
However the race was an exciting one. Rob Clark (Det) driving an SR Racing Evolution won the event. Doug Sontag (CKR) had carb problems and Qualified 4th, but after an SR carb replacement he quickly moved up and finished 2nd and set fast race lap. Third place was Bill Wolfe (New Mexico) also in an SR Car. Fourth was Dave Blevins (Cinci).
Formula First is a class started about 5 years ago by SR and 2 other FV competitors to modernize the class and have a new parts supply more radially available. It uses a 1600cc engine with bigger cam, carb, disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, inboard shocks, Formula Ford tires and a longer wheel base.
The Formula First class is fast growing and has a series of its own consisting of 12 races with Sponsorship from Hoosier, K&N, Aurora and several other vendors. (More info here:

CKR based Spec Miata team WINS at the 12hrs of Nelson Ledges

Road Racing News
The #21 Spec Miata owned by Randy Walker and sponsored by local shop racecarsupply.com (SR Racing) drove to a class win at the 12 hours of Nelson Ledges this past Saturday! Three drivers, Randy Walker, Wes Allen, and Dr. Jon Ricker, along with a support crew of about 15 CKR guys (and one amazing cook, Judy Walker), qualified on Friday 2nd in class and 12th overall. We had a nearly flawless race, full of consistent fast laps from all three drivers, and we had gathered up 1st place in the Spec Miata class by the fourth hour. We protected that class lead for the remainder, and kept climing up the overall board until we reached fourth position towards the end. We logged over 1000 miles, went through 3 sets of Hoosier R6's, nearly 100 gallons of fuel, and the car remained steady and fast the whole way. The only small issue was a starter/clutch interlock swith that went bad about halfway through, and we had to push start the car out of the pits from then on. The pit crew put on a clinic how to do fast, consistent, error-free pit stops, and the drivers pushed the car hard enough to run fast laps, but took care of her the whole way.
This was the team's third consecutive year at the annual endurance race at Nelson, but the first time finishing.
A big congrats to the whole team for representing CKR in such an awesome, well-executed effort! Look for a writeup covering the entire weeknd on the CKR home page soon.
