Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona
Our very own Wes Allen is a co-driver at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Check it out! January 29th, 2006
If you go to www.grandamerican.com
you can see live updates on where everyone is. You'll see that the
43 car (Wes') is back in 43 overall, 21 in GT. Yesterday afternoon
the third driver spun on his second lap, damaging the car. The
wreck was shown on SPEED, but they followed the DP car that he
hit. They changed the clutch twice trying to get back out, but
realized it needed a new master and slave cylinder. They finally
got back out at about 9:00 pm last night, so their goal of a top
10 finish was pretty shot. Wes was in good spirits last night
though... knowing he was going to get to drive some more
eventually. Overnight it looks like they made up a lot of laps and
will probably work up a few more spots, anyway.![]()

Long time member Doug Sontag earned an invitation and competed in the SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this year in the Formula V class. He spent a week there practicing, qualifying, and racing.
Monday, in practice on new tires, Doug ran his fastest time ever at Mid-Ohio, a 1:42.424. Tuesday and Wednesday qualifying times were a bit slower, 1:43.067 and 1:43.058, due to tires that were not as good as we thought. A decision was made to go back to Monday's new tires for Thursdays final qualifying. But on the second lap an off-course excursion resulted in a broken rear suspension part which made the car un-drivable, and produced an even slower time of 1:44.069. This placed Doug 40th out of 44 competitors. Needless to say, he wasn't happy, this isn't a good place to start.
The car was repaired and ready for Sunday's 11:00 am start time. Not knowing how much damage was done to the tires, Doug had another set of new tires brought to the track by Jim and Greg Sching of SR Racing. SR build the engines in Doug's car and are always working to make all of us faster and more competitive.
With the help of a set of radios in the hands of nephew Cameron, who was sitting in the stands at the end of the backstretch, Doug was able to hear that the green flag was out before him and his fellow competitors at the back could see it. As usual things are busy at the back with cars getting together and going off course. Doug made a bold move on the outside and left his foot down, not slowing. At the end of lap one he had passed 12 cars. By the end of lap 7, he had passed 18. Through the middle part of the race Doug reached competitors running comparable speeds to his (he ran a personal best of 1:42.060). 7 cars in his pack diced for what would ultimately be 13th place. In Vee racing drafting is a key part, most laps they were three wide, some times 4 wide, going into the Keyhole and turn 7 at the end of the backstretch. The cars in Doug's pack changed position several times per lap. Such close racing created opportunities for some dramatic moves, like Doug passing 3 cars on the outside at the top of the hill in turn 8.
Between hard driving and attrition Doug improved from 40th to 13th, a total of 27 places.
This earned him the Sunoco Hard Charger Award for Formula Vee.
Doug's car was designed by him, and built by him and Jeff O'Brien at Jeff's machine shop, JOMCO, in Versailles.
All 23 races are being shown on the SPEED Channel. You can catch the V race December 17th at 1:00.

Report from CKR member and sponsor, Jim Schings, SR Racing, April 11th, 2005
Jared Smith (Son of Win Smith) has signed up to do a season with SR Racing of Lexington. Jared is a Junior at Danville HS. He has a substantial background in Carts and some Sprint car seat time and now wants to try his hard at Open Wheel FV Road Racing. His first test was the March 11-13 St. Louis Gateway International School and Regional Race.
He adapted very well. He was quick right out of the box. We assumed that being in a new type car on the track with several classes (some more powerful cars) would be somewhat intimidating. Not only did it not intimidate him, a large portion of these cars were actually slowing him down. He was not only the fastest Vee, but was mid pack in Formula Fords, Spec Racers and more.
In his 3rd session he closed up on a Spec Racer a bit quickly which had him get on the brakes in the middle of turn one. The lightened rear end caused him to go around where he caught the tire wall. Damage wasn't real bad, but it was too much to fix in time for his next session, so SR put him into the spare car. Again the incident didn't slow him down and he was getting faster every session.
After a successful completion of the school he was ready for his first Vee race on Sunday. He qualified 1st in Vee, and about 10th overall in a 20+ car field. His race was flawless. He lapped his closest Vee competitor and finished mid pack in a overwhelmingly more powerful field. The only place anyone could pass him was on the straights. Congrats to Jared, with his School completion and first Regional win!
If this is any indication, we look forward to a very nice season. His next test will be at Indianapolis Raceway Park on May 7/8.
